I never watched “The Practice” when on TV but got watching binging on Prime. Saw the quality right away but after 3 seasons started to tire of the “criminal defendants” and how the lawyers had to defend and sometimes be threatened etc. by them.

Oddly I had watched “Boston Legal” on TV and found it OK but not the quality of the early Practice. Spader’s sarcastic, condescending, sexist bantor I found not humorous or clever, as many have said. His mocking comments and illegal activities were a detriment to final season of Practice. Don’t remember if he skirted the law on Boston Legal. Crane’s bumbling did not enhance the show.

The characters of Rebecca, Lucy and Lyndsay needed the same good send-off afforded Bobby Donnell, who had admittedly become a total mess long before Season 8.

It really is amazing just HOW MUCH of a mess Bobby was by the end of Season 7.

The show was better in season 8. And Rebecca was the most annoying character the first seven seasons. Absolutely hated the character

Season eight was such a fantastic season after a slow decline in quality. Of course, this is largely because Spader was a fresh anchor to the show and his largely mercenary attitude seemed different from Bobby’s moral compass. As a transitional chapter from the Practice to Boston Legal, I honestly don’t think you could ask for better.

Also, this show needs a proper DVD release as only the first and part of the second and the last have been released.

Yeah, I have no idea why they don’t just do a complete series set.

I agree with all of this expect the “so eventually, Donnell made the firm Donnell, Dole, Young and Frutt” part. The change in the firm came about because the other lawyers threatened to walk unless Bobby made them partners.

The only reason he made them all partners was because the firm was becoming so successful that he really couldn't reasonably turn them down at that point, as they were making so much money that it would have been stupid to NOT make them partners if that's what it took to keep them, so I think it fits into the narrative of the very general recap of the show (you know, they started small in Season 1, but then became a successful firm by the end of Season 2).

I also recall that Rebecca Washington also wanted to be a partner but as she was (not yet) a lawyer that wasn’t possible so some other accommodation was made for her.
