They fear that the show won’t work if Todd grows, and that’s just so silly, since “Lovable screwup detective works for his Type A mother’s law firm” is a fine concept as is! Almost every time that the characters were allowed to grow in the first season, they had to hit the reset button to get them back to bickering. Todd wasn’t *allowed* to grow and be competent, even though the conceit of the show needs us to believe that he is. They have to put all their toys back in the box, and there’s only one way they know how to make them fit!

I’ve seen a number of TV series where the character who does nothing but take advantage of his friends and takes responsibility for next to nothing is the “cool” one. It might work if they were lovable or actually accomplished something besides mooching. but they don’t.
