Yeah, but the movie was a huge hit and won a few Oscars, so I don't think the casting could really be seen to have held it back, ya know?

Russell Crowe in Les Miserables was pretty painful. Actually, most of the singers in that were woefully miscast. Hugh Jackman's a decent singer, but doesn't quite have the chops to pull off Jean Valjean. The director insisting on doing all the singing live on set didn't help (the take they used of Valjean's lament after being forgiven by the bishop was reportedly done after a full day of shooting and Jackman is beet-faced and practically screaming the lyrics just to get them out when the song is meant to be somber and emotive). Samantha Barks as Éponine is the only one who really comes off unblemished, not surprising considering she was the only one who'd played in Les Mis before (I know Jackman's done some musical theater but nothing on this level).

Great call. I was thinking of the original film adaptation, but you're absolutely right, the remake with Ball was awful and a flop and it did, indeed, fail due to the terrible decision to cast Ball as the lead.

I see what you saying with Paint Your Waggon. I actually love "Wand´rin Star" by Lee Marvin, it actually kinda helped the movie he couldn´t sing as it sounds honest and fits the intention. Also I´d argue part of why Mamma Mia! is such a hit is that it concentrates more on the fun and the enthusiasm of the cast instead of professional singing. I mean, Pierce Brosnan´s S.O.S. WAS horrible but it totally fit into the scene.

That was a hit movie, so the terrible singing didn't seem to hold it back. They even did a sequel!
