The bit about “Murphy bed” and “Kelly bed” never occurred to me — I just knew that “Kelly Green” is an actual color, suggesting that the creators of the show-within-a-show were giving themselves plausible deniability despite clearly copying the rhythm and basic structure of “Murphy Brown.”

The show was certainly well known enough to get Dan Quayle’s attention, to his regret. It probably got a lot of chatter with journalists and D.C. people who were interested in their world being on tv, which helped its feeling of importance.
