It’s a great post-Watergate paranoia thriller with a terrific script. But Redford and Dunaway are both way too Hollywood glamorous for the roles they play. Blonde, beautiful Redford is supposed to be some nebbish-y bookworm who works at a low-level intelligence operative, and statuesque goddess Dunaway plays a mousy artist living in a basement-level studio in Brooklyn. No, just no, on both accounts. I can’t help thinking how much better the film could’ve been if they ‘d cast some grittier leads, say Dustin Hoffman and Talia Shire.
