Today, I am celebrating the Hallmark Christmas movie universe finally allowing some sex to occur.
Knowledge Waits is a feature where I just share some bit of pop culture history that interests me that doesn’t quite fit into the other features.
Last year, I noted that it was absurd that TV Christmas Movies on networks like Hallmark and Lifetime were devoid of sex, as people, including small town folks, who fall in love very often have sex, not just a chaste kiss at the end of the film. As I would always tell my late mother, who loved these sorts of movies, “Why isn’t there ever any fucking?” and, well, finally, the great Sarah Drew has delivered!
Not on Hallmark just yet (I imagine it will be quite some time before Hallmark ever allows it), but tonight, in her Christmas Movie, A Cowboy Christmas Romance, Drew wrote a sex scene in the film (about a big city real estate agent who travels to her hometown to get a hold of some land from a rancher, but instead, he gets a hold of her…romantically spesaking). This is Lifetime’s first Christmas movie sex scene, and Drew explained that she wrote it in there because, well, DUH, “It wasn’t like, ‘Oh, let me try to do this thing that’ll get headlines.’ I was like, ‘No, I think this makes sense. They’re falling in love.’ And every single step of the way is drawing them closer together. And they’re super connected to one another. And they’re grown ups. They’re grown ups and they’re feeling the vibes!’”
OBVIOUSLY, Sarah Drew! You are so right. This is just what HAPPENS in real life, so why in the world must we distort it so much in holiday movies?
One day, Hallmark, one day!
