Today, we take a look at all seven of the Easter Eggs that Google put up for Friends back in 2019 for the show’s 25th anniversary.
In Pop Culture Easter Eggs, I share with you pop culture “easter eggs.” An easter egg is a joke/visual gag/homage/in-joke that is hidden in works that you are meant to find (just like an easter egg). They range from the not-so-obscure to the really obscure. So come check ’em all out and enjoy!
Reader Ken S. wrote in to suggest that I feature these. You see, back in 2019, for the 25th anniversary of the hit sitcom, Friends, Google decided to do seven cute Easter Eggs that would pop up in seven searches related to the show. Here they are.
1. “Phoebe Buffay” or “Phoebe Friends”
The screen will show you a guitar. If you click on it, it will play Lisa Kudrow, as Phoebe, singing her classic tune, “Smelly Cat,” as an animated smelly cat walks around on your screen.
2. “Rachel Green” or “Rachel Friends”
The screen will show you a picture of Jennifer Aniston’s famous hairstyle on the screen. If you click on it, you see images of people wearing “The Rachel.” This is probably the least interesting of the Easter Eggs.
3. “Monica Geller” or “Monica Friends”
The screen will show you a sudsy bucket. If you click on it, Monica will “clean” your screen with a sponge…
4. “Ross Geller” or “Ross Friends”
The screen will show you a couch. If you click on it, your screen will tilt, as Ross shouts, “Pivot!” This will happen each time you click on the couch until the couch breaks, and Ross will explain that it can’t pivot anymore.
5. “Chandler Bing” or “Chandler Friends”
The screen will show you a recliner. If you click on it, an animated Chick and Duck will exit and walk around your screen for a bit.
6. “Joey Tribbiani” or “Joey Friends”
The screen will show you a slice of pizza. If you click on it, other pieces of food will pop up on your screen and then animated Joey arms will grab them all as Joey shouts, “Joey doesn’t share food.”
7. “Friends Glossary”
The screen will show you a word or term related to Friends, most commonly starting with “On a break”…
But other words, like Trifle, will pop up each time you reload (I think there’s about 15 or so different options).
Very cute stuff.
Thanks for the head’s up, Ken! If anyone else has suggestions for a future Pop Culture Easter Eggs, feel free to drop me a line at firstname.lastname@example.org.
